THE CURRICULUM - A Parent’s Guide

In September 1989, the National Curriculum was introduced in England.

Curriculum 2000 was implemented from August 2000.

The curriculum is implemented through the Foundation Stage (ages 3-5) and in four Key Stages. At this school we teach children at the Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2) and Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6).

The English National Curriculum consists of the following:
Core Subjects
English
Maths
Science
Foundation Subjects
Design & Technology
Art & Design
ICT
P.E
Geography
History
Music
Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship is taught alongside the National Curriculum

THE FOUNDATION STAGE

Nursery and Reception Class
Children are encouraged to explore, discover and gain understanding through carefully structured play and learning activities.

In the Early Years, our children develop skills and dexterity. They develop their ability to speak, listen, read (using phonics) and write. We help them to build an
understanding of the science of mathematics and to explore and investigate the world around them. They are taught to express themselves through art, music, dance and drama.

Key Stage 1 (Year 1 & 2) and Key Stage 2 (Years 3, 4, 5 & 6)
The English National Curriculum consists of the core subjects English, Maths, Science; and the foundation subjects Design & Technology, Art & Design, ICT, P.E., Geography, History and Music.

We teach our children the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to make progress and to achieve high standards.

Teachers have clear objectives for each lesson and use methods designed to promote high academic standards.
