Our Clinic
The school nursing service at Lagos Preparatory School is focused on the needs of the individual child or young person
in the school community as a whole, as well as, parents and careers.
The key responsibilities of the school nurse
- Making an assessment of the health needs of the school and developing a health development plan.
- Working in partnership with children, parents, and school community to address identified needs.
- Supporting, advising, counseling and referring children experiencing mental health problems or any other health problem.
- Helping and supporting parents to promote good parenting skills.
- Supporting vulnerable children and young people; working alongside teachers, social workers and other professionals.
- Providing nursing care, support and advice for children and young people with special needs.
- Providing training for school - based staff to support children with health care needs e.g. asthma etc.
- Providing support and advice for parents, careers and school staff on childhood illness and the management and control of
infection and communicable diseases.
- Carrying out health assessment e.g. height, weight, vision and hearing.
The current emphasis on health promotion in schools and the community means that this is also a key part of the school nurse's role
and this focuses on:
- Nutrition and physical activity.
- Mental health and wellbeing.
- Sexual health and relationships.
- Oral and dental health.
- Substance abuse, including smoking and alcohol.
The Nurse at Lagos Preparatory School also serves as a consultant to school personnel, parents, as well as to the
community and social agencies.
Duties and responsibilities
- Conduct state mandated health screening programme.
- Refer parents of students needing medical care or social assistance to the appropriate private or community resource.
- Serve as a health education resource person to the school staff, students and parent community.
- Assist the school secretary in administration of first aid and the regulation of communicable disease control.
- Supervise volunteers assisting in health appraisal programmes.
- Assist in identification of safety and health hazards on the school sites.
- Maintain health records of all students as part of the student{s} cumulative records.
- Interpret the health and developmental assessment to parents, teachers, administrators and other professionals
directly concerned with the student.
- Interpret medical and nursing findings appropriate to the student{s} individual educational plan {IEP} and make
recommendations to professional personnel directly involved.
- Inform appropriate school personnel of health and physical liabilities of students.
- Counsel with parents, students, and school staff regarding health related attendance problems.
- Participate in the evaluation and planning process of students in special education.
- Serve on site based student study teams, as appropriate.
- Assure that every student{s} immunization is in compliance with the law.
- Maintain professional competence through participation in professional organizations related to the school.
- Perform other nursing duties as assigned by the head of the school.
