ENGLISH

English is taught mainly through daily Literacy lessons, and covers three main areas:
1. Speaking and Listening

These skills will be developed through telling stories, discussion, giving a talk, following and giving instructions, solo and group reading and through drama and poetry.

2. Reading

Children have fun reading. Reading will develop through fiction, non-fiction poetry, literature from other countries and cultures. It will involve silent reading for pleasure and information and using of reference books and IT based reference material.

3. Writing

Writing will take the form of stories, factual accounts, letters and poems. Children will be taught how to write for different audiences in a joined, legible handwriting style.
This school has implemented the recommendations of the
National Literacy Strategy.

MATHEMATICS

Our aim is not only to provide the opportunities for each child to acquire knowledge, skills and understanding in mathematics, but enable them to use and apply these in problem solving and particularly in 'real life' situations.

The school has adopted the principles of the National Numeracy Strategy and continues to follow and refine its delivery. We use the Abacus Scheme amongst other resources to support its delivery.

The programmes of study are set out in key stages as follows:

At Key Stage 1 the sections relate to:
Using and applying mathematics
Number, Shape, Space and Measures

At Key Stage 2 the sections relate to:
Using and applying mathematics
Number, Shape, Space and Measures

Handling Data
The children will be continually encouraged to develop a practical and questioning approach to their work. The development of mathematical processes is at least as important as the acquisition of skills and knowledge. Mathematics is viewed as an exciting area of the curriculum
that links with other work and topics.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

Design Technology is a subject that allows children to combine knowledge and understanding with designing and making skills. Pupils evaluate, design and make quality products in response to real needs.
As well as designing and making products, pupils will be taught specific skills such as using cutting tools safely and accurately. They will then be able to use these skills in their design and making assignments.

Pupils will also be taught to disassemble, investigate and evaluate their own work and other products in order to identify strengths and weaknesses, suggesting and implementing improvements. All children will experience 'making' with a wide range of materials and components.

They will investigate properties of materials in order to decide which material is best suited to a task.

Children will use their knowledge and understanding of other subjects in their design technology work especially Literacy, Numeracy, science, art and ICT.

Children will be taught to consider health and safety issues when working with food, tools and materials. They will be taught the appropriate vocabulary to describe the equipment, materials, components and processes they use.

ART & DESIGN

Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides children with a unique way of understanding and responding to the world using colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. Through art and design activities, children learn to make valued judgements, becoming actively involved in shaping environments.

Children will have the opportunity to work in a variety of 2D and 3D media, and mediums including pencils, pens, inks, paints, chalks, charcoal, pastels, and clay, natural and manmade materials, fabric and painting.

They explore ideas and meanings in the work of artists, craftspeople and designers in different times and cultures. Children's work is displayed in classrooms and other areas of the school to enable children and adults to value each others creative efforts and to provide an attractive and stimulating environment.

SCIENCE

The main aim of teaching science is to promote an enquiring mind and
develop scientific abilities through practical first hand experiences.

We use the Explore Science Scheme amongst other resources to support the delivery of the QCA's Scheme of Work for science.
Pupils will have opportunities to access information from the Internet, use data logging equipment (to measure temperature, light and sound) and explore with a microscope that can be linked to a classroom computer.

In developing this aim we are mindful of the requirements of the
National Curriculum which sets out the following Programmes of Study:

1 Knowledge, Skills and Understanding
Scientific questioning
Systematic enquiry
Science in everyday life
The nature of scientific ideas
Communication
Health & Safety
Planning experimental work
Obtaining and presenting evidence
Considering evidence
Evaluating

2 Life Processes and Living Things
Life processes
Human and other animals
Green plants
Variation and classification
Living things in their environment

3 Materials and Their Properties
Grouping materials and classifying
Changing materials
Separating mixtures of materials (Key Stage 2 only)

4. Physical Processes
Electricity
Forces and Motion
Light and sound
The Earth and beyond

INFORMATION,COMMUNIC- ATION & TECHNOLOGY

The school is fortunate enough to have a well appointed computer suite with 11 computers. This enables children to work on an individual computer during lessons.
Pupils follow the National Curriculum programme of study supported by the QCA and schemes of work. We ensure the requirements of National Curriculum are met through the following programmes of study:

1) Finding things out:
Finding information eg using the Internet/CDroms
Preparing information text and databases
Interpreting information.

2) Developing ideas and making things happen:
Organising text, tables, images and sound
Creating sequences of instructions and monitoring events...
Using simulations and exploring models.

3) Exchanging and sharing information:
Plan work sensitive to the audience they are writing for

4) Reviewing, modifying and evaluating work:
Review their own and other's work
Compare ICT with other resources
Talk about improvements
